Chapter 17

He grabbed his phone and took a few steps away, holding it to his ear. Riley dropped to sit beside Kitty and snagged hers, reading through the rules herself. In the background, she could just hear Logan.

"Hey, Dad, got a question." A pause. "Yeah, I'm at a horse show. Just ran into Mike. Let me run this by you before I tell you about that. No, Riley's fine. Dad. Dad. Dad! If PLG advertises a match to beat me, would it matter who I work for if there's no payout?"

Riley glanced up at the long pause. Logan was staring at the ground, nodding at points his father must be making.

"Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Let it be known I'm working for them from the start. Right. Really? Well, it's Riley's and Kitty's idea. Her roommate. Yes. No. No! Dad! You're sick." He laughed. "Mike just made me a bet. If I win, I'm full partner. I can win this, too."

There was another long pause, and she watched him shove his hair back, an exasperated look on his face.

"So you want me to turn down the chance to be a full partner because I like kid's games? I don't fucking think so. Look it up. You're a fucking attorney, that's why! Seriously, Dad? Whatever. Yeah. Just call them and ask. I bet they'll agree. Yeah. Ok, bye."

"Oh," Kitty sighed. "That didn't go well."

Logan laughed. "Not too bad, all things considered. When's our next class?"

Riley smiled sympathetically. "Thirty minutes. Dee goes back in, that's why I didn't take her braids out. He still hates me?"

Logan just shrugged. "A bit, but he'll get over it. He also thinks it might work, if the PLG will go for it." He shrugged, unable to hide the grin. "I wouldn't complain."

"Well," Kitty said, stretching her feet into the aisle. "All in all, a pretty good day."

"Yeah. Speaking of that. Um, I started a rumor with someone named Tom Steading."

"Asshole," Kitty muttered.

Riley tilted her head. "What rumor?"

"Oh, that Andrews might be suing for breach of contract, defamation of character, loss of income, liable and slander, among other things. Just thought you should know."

"I don't want to get involved in a fucking lawsuit!" she told him.

"I said it was a rumor." He smirked as he tried to shrug innocently. "Figured it wouldn't take too long before someone figures out that your newest friend is an attorney, so might as well use the chance when it came up."

Kitty was giggling, but Riley just shook her head, unsure if she was angry or appreciative. "You're a pain in my ass sometimes, Logan."

"Hmm," he said, grabbing her. "Haven't tried that."

"Oh!" Kitty teased. "I do not want to know what you two are doing in there at night."

Logan just wiggled his eyebrows at her. "Three's a party."

"Not in my house," Kitty said. "That's my damned sister, almost, that you're talking about."

With a sigh, he plopped to the ground beside them. "I am kidding. Also glad you told me to wear jeans." Then he jerked his head at the idiots up the row.
